Mya Taylor to speak March 22

Mya Taylor: actor, singer, and black transgender woman. Gotham award winner for breakthrough actor. Star of Tangerine. As part of her #Oscarssowhite tour, and MSUM’s Women’s History Month, Mya Taylor will speak about the intersections of her life and story, discuss her work in Tangerine as well as other recent projects, and promote the importance of people of color being represented in Hollywood. This is going to be an event that you don’t want to miss!

Anita Bender to speak on The Impact of Landscape in a University Setting

Her topic will be “The Impact of Landscape in a University Setting: A Look at Selected Spaces at Minnesota State University Moorhead.” The talk will take place  Friday, Nov. 1, at 11:30 a.m. in BR 154. Travel funds and free bus seats available to attend Women’s Studies Conference

The annual Red River Women’s Studies Conference will take place at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks Friday, October 4, 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Early bird registration deadline for students ($10) and faculty ($35) is Friday, September 27. Register at the Red River Women’s Studies Conference website.

Student travel funds to cover the cost of early bird registration for students are available through the Women’s Center. Contact Anita Bender at anita.bender@mnstate.edu for more information.

Take Back the Night Event to take place Thursday, Sept. 19

The 2013 Take Back the Night Event will take place Thursday, Sept. 19, on the campus mall. The event will start at 5:30 p.m. with a free barbecue in front of the Science Laboratory. This will be followed at 6:15 p.m. with a program that will include speakers, music, and more. Following the program, there will be a march around campus to show solidarity with victims of sexual and domestic violence. The event will conclude with a candlelight vigil. Two events to celebrate “Sewing Seeds: International Women’s Day Eve”

Women’s and Gender Studies and the Women’s Center are sponsoring two events in celebration of “Sewing Seeds: International Women’s Day Eve,” Thursday, March 7.  The first event is a Women’s Center Open House from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.  The theme is “Soup and Seeds.”  There will be warm soup for eating and heirloom seeds to take home and plant in the spring. Community artist and LGBTQ community organizer to speak at MSUM

Mara Morken will be the Women’s and Gender Studies Colloquium Speaker on Friday, Oct. 19, 11:30-12:30 p.m., in the Women’s Center (Bridges 154), at Minnesota State University Moorhead.

Morken is a community artist and a LGBTQ community organizer who moved from Brooklyn, New York, to Fargo-Moorhead two years ago. In New York, she was involved in a number of art projects, including a mural project in a low-income neighborhood in collaboration with a homeless LGBTQ youth. Read the rest of this entry →

Take Back the Night event is Sept. 13

A barbeque and music by singer-songwriter Kris Kitko will kick off the 2012 Take Back the Night event Thursday, September 13, on the MSUM campus mall. Events begin at 5:30 p.m. and include a poetry slam, speakers, a march around campus and a candlelight vigil.  The event is free and open to the campus community.

Take Back the Night events seek to increase awareness of violence against women. In the United States, one in five college women have been raped at some point in their lifetimes, according to One in Four, a national non-profit working to end sexual assault and rape on university campuses. Monday, April 2 is the kickoff for Diversity Week, presented by the MSUM Student Senate Diversity Committee. Monday’s theme is Identities, Issues and Intersections and there will be two events held in the CMU. From 10:30 a.m.-2:00 p.m. in CMU 205, there will be organizations tabling introducing students to different identities and issues. There will be tables from Women’s and Gender Studies, Hendrix Health Center, Gay Straight Alliance, Planned Parenthood, Women’s Center/CFO/Triota and Students Against Human Trafficking.
