Welcome to the #DragonFamily: Jed Locquiao

Meet MSUM’s new Assistant Professor in the School of Teaching and Learning, Jed Locquiao. He is passionate about special education and aims to show his students how to ask good questions.

Start Date: August 18, 2020

Q: What drew you to MSUM?
A: When I interviewed here… the faculty from the special education department who showed me around made me feel so welcome. I felt so comfortable, I like I could grow here, learn here, and I could make mistakes here and it would be OK.

Q: What is one thing that surprised you about MSUM?
A: What really got me going was the fact that your mascot is a dragon! That got my imagination all fired up too.

Q: How do you prefer to start your workday?
A: I like to start my day early, I am a morning person. I prefer to have the sun shining on my face as I commute here… and blasting the music up, it feels really good.

Q: Where are your favorite places to eat in Fargo-Moorhead? Why?
A: Brew Bird. The chicken is really spicy, and I’m from Nevada, so there’s a very strong heritage of spicy foods. The other one is Sol in Moorhead. They serve the Bipbimbop, which is a Korean dish. It is fun to have that all the way up here in the upper midwest. The third one is the Moorhead Dairy Queen, I had a dilly bar for the first time and I loved it!

Q: What’s the best advice you were ever given? Who was it from?
A: My professor who mentored me through my Ph.D. told me something that has stayed with me, and I encourage all of my students to practice and exercise too, and it is this: You take 24 hours to feel all of it. Do you need to do to feel it, sit with it, feel the crumminess, and just give yourself 24 hours of it. After the 24 hours are finished, it’s a new day, get back to work.

Welcome to MSUM, Jed. We’re glad you joined the #DragonFamily!
