Five MSUM employees selected for 2017 Luoma Leadership Academy

Five MSU employees have been selected for the 2017 Luoma Leadership Academy. They are:

Building a leadership culture on campus

“Although it is true that some people are born with greater natural gifts than others, the ability to lead is really a collection of skills, nearly all of which can be learned and improved.” ~ John Maxwell

As part of the university’s effort to invest in the people who make MSUM a great place to work, John Maxwell’s 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership is gaining steam on campus.

The program grew out of the campus climate survey, which identified the desire to increase empowerment and connection. Charged with the task of identifying a leadership development opportunity to do that were Dean Marsha Weber, Dean Randy Cagle, former Dean Tim Borchers, CIO Dan Heckaman, Interim Dean Denise Gorsline and AD Doug Peters. They reviewed several leadership development-training models, but chose Maxwell’s 21 Laws. Maxwell’s life work is focused on leadership, and he’s written more than 50 books on the topic.

“We chose Maxell because his biggest theme is the critique of positional leadership. For Maxwell, leadership is influence, no matter what position you are in. It seemed like a good model for MSUM to adopt,” said Randy Cagle, Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Read the rest of this entry →

HLC Visit April 23-25, 2017

The University has an important visit from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) scheduled for April 23-25, 2017. This is to reaffirm our accreditation status. Three finalists for the position of Interim Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences are scheduled to hold open forums for the MSUM community. The forums are scheduled for May 9, 10, and 13 and all members of the MSUM community are invited to attend. These forums are an opportunity to learn more about the finalists and to submit comments on their qualifications to the search committee. The Interim Dean will provide academic leadership and coordination for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and will serve on the President’s Cabinet, the Academic Affairs Council, and other University committees as needed. MSUM hosted undergraduate research meeting

MSUM was host to the 7th Annual Undergraduate Research in the Molecular Sciences (URMS) meeting October 28-29, 2011.

Students and faculty from as far away as Minot State University, South Dakota State University and Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota (Winona) enjoyed two days of stimulating scientific discussions and debate. The 110+ participants took part in oral and poster presentations of undergraduate research efforts, as well as hearing from a number of keynote speakers from academia and industry.
