Winners of the 2017 Comstock-Gág Read Aloud Books Awards announced

For the thirteenth year, children have chosen the best read aloud picture books in the Minnesota State University Moorhead’s (MSUM) Comstock-Gág Read Aloud Book Awards program.

The 2017 winner of the Wanda Gág Read Aloud Book Award for the preschool to eight year old category is “It Came in the Mail” written and illustrated by Ben Clanton and published by Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers. Read the rest of this entry →

Livingston Lord Library Native American Heritage Month Displays

Check out new displays in the Livingston Lord Library celebrating Native American Heritage Month. There is a display of children’s and young adult books in the Curriculum Materials Center (2nd floor) and materials from the college collection on the 3rd floor of the Library. Featured are award winning books written by native authors Joseph Bruchac, S.D. Nelson, Tim Tingle, Louise Erdrich, Kent Nerburn, and Jim Northrup to name just a few.

  • Hardcovers: 1 Book – $6.00, 2+ Books – $5.00
  • Paperbacks: 1 Book – $3.00, 2+ Books – $2.00

Please, cash and check only. These books have little to no markings and were mainly published in 2015. All proceeds from the sale help fund the Comstock-Gág Read Aloud Book Awards program sponsored by the Curriculum Materials Center of the Livingston Lord Library. Thank you for your support!

MSUM Curriculum Lab Receives Large Book Donation

Adell Bridgeford donated approximately 584 books, stuffed animals, characters, puppet kits, big books, card games, tapes, and posters, all related to children’s literature, to the Minnesota State University Moorhead Curriculum Lab in the library. Bridgeford was a school media specialist for the Walker-Hackensack-Akeley school district for 37 years.  And she plans to donate more in the future. Read the rest of this entry →

Committee work includes screening new picture books, attending two committee meetings, and in April ultimately selecting the best read aloud picture books for ages toddler-8 and ages 9-12 published in the United States in 2016. The Livingston Lord Library Curriculum Materials Center is looking for MSUM students who are interested in serving on our 2015-2016 Read Aloud Book Awards Committee. Committee work includes screening new picture books, attending two committee meetings, and in April ultimately selecting the best read aloud picture books published in 2015. If desired, committee members many also read aloud to children.

Comstock Reading Aloud Initiative donates books

This summer, the Comstock Reading Aloud Initiative, sponsored by Livingston Lord Library, donated nearly 450 picture books to school libraries and agencies. This year’s recipients included, DC Prep, Washington, DC; Hawley Elementary School; MSUM Early Childhood Center; White Earth Early Childhood Program; Lincoln Elementary School, Fargo; Northern Cass Elementary, Hunter, ND; and Richland Elementary, Abercrombie, ND. These locations were selected by the 2012-2013 Read Aloud Committee members. Over 300 titles were also added to the MSUM Curriculum Materials Center.

A tribute to Maurice Sendak

The Curriculum Materials Center of the Library is featuring an exhibit of the work of world-renown illustrator, Maurice Sendak (1928-2012). On exhibit is his body of work (held in the Livingston Lord Library), beginning with the 1950’s to 2011. The books are displayed in chronological order. A bibliography is also available. The books will be on display through November 2. Sendak’s sums up his work: “The subject of all my work is the extraordinary heroism of children. I side with the kids all the time.”

Comstock Reading Aloud Initiative donates books

This summer, the Comstock Reading Aloud Initiative, sponsored by Livingston Lord Library, donated nearly 500 picture books to regional schools. This year’s recipients included, the Academy for Children, Horace Mann Elementary, It’s a Small World Preschool, Jefferson Elementary, and McKinley Elementary, all in Fargo; Dilworth Elementary, Glyndon Elementary, Perham Elementary, St. Joseph Catholic School, Moorhead; the Reading Recovery Program, Evergreen Park, MN; Tri County Elementary, Karlstad; West Side Elementary, West Fargo; and Viking Elementary, Grand Forks. These locations were selected by the 2010-2011 Read Aloud Committee members. Over 250 titles were also added to the MSUM Curriculum Materials Center.

Library celebrates 50 years; best-sellers on display

As part of the Library’s 50th anniversary celebration, there will be a revolving display of best-sellers for each decade from 1960-2010 throughout the academic year. This display is located in the Circulation area on first floor. The 1960s decade is now featured, which includes such titles as Games People Play by Eric Berne, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, and Valley of the Dolls by Jacqueline Susann.

In addition, the Curriculum Materials Center located on the second floor of the Library, is featuring notable children’s books for the same time periods. Currently on display are books from the 1960s including The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle, Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak, and Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle.

New books, media on display in Curriculum Materials Center

The Curriculum Materials Center, located on second floor of the Library, is currently featuring displays of new books and media recently added to the collection. This includes kits, games, DVDs, fiction, picture books, teacher resources, folklore, poetry, science, social studies, and other nonfiction topics. The materials are designed to use in teaching PreK-secondary students. Visitors are invited to sign up for door prizes. The displays are available through September 17.
