Annual Family History Workshop Oct. 2 at MSUM
Decoding the Maze is the theme for the 35th Annual Family History Workshop to be held Saturday, October 2 Minnesota State University Moorhead. The 2010 Family History Workshop features Stephen Morse the creator of the One-Step Website for which he has received both the Lifetime Achievement Award and the Outstanding Contribution Award from the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies, Award of Merit from the National Genealogical Society, first-ever Excellence Award from the Association of Professional Genealogists, and two awards that he cannot pronounce from Polish genealogical societies.
In his other life Morse is a computer professional with a doctorate degree in electrical engineering. He has held various research, development, and teaching positions, authored numerous technical papers, written four textbooks, and holds four patents. He is best known as the architect of the Intel 8086 (the granddaddy of today’s Pentium processor), which sparked the PC revolution 30 years ago.
Stephen’s sessions will be “One-Step Webpages: A Potpourri of Genealogical Search Tools,” “One-Step Webpages: A Hodgepodge of Lesser-Known Gems,” “Deep Linking & Deeper Linking: How I Get the Most Out of Existing Search Applications,” and “From DNA to Genetic Genealogy: Everything you wanted to know but were afraid to ask.”
The workshop schedule also includes many other session topics including beginning genealogy, strategies for solving Swedish genealogical research problems, getting the most out of Ancestry.com, seven habits of effective genealogy, vital records on the Minnesota frontier, German-Russian resources at the ND State Archives, cracking the code to beginning German research, beginning research in Pommern/Posen; North Dakota vital records, 19th Century military records, beginning Norwegian genealogy, Norwegian on-line genealogy resources, probate records: a genealogical & family history treasure, reconstructing your family’s small US business: accessible records, beginning youth genealogy, family history center/family search, genealogical software: how do the top programs compare?, British intelligence: smart strategies for tracking down English, Scottish and Welsh ancestors. In addition the North Dakota State Genealogical Society will hold their regular meeting.
The Family History Workshop runs from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on October 2, 2010, in the Comstock Union on the MSUM campus at 615 14th Street South in Moorhead. The luncheon program features a special speaker and presentations of family history research awards. An exhibit hall featuring booths for more than twenty organizations and vendors is open throughout most of the day.
The workshop cost of $40 includes four lectures of your choice, the workshop syllabus with all handouts, and morning & afternoon coffee breaks. Noon luncheon is provided at no additional cost for those whose pre-registration and payment are received by September 25, 2010. Walk-in attendees are welcome. A limited number of luncheon tickets are available for walk-in registrants on a first-come basis.
Youth ages 11-17 may attend the special Beginning Youth Genealogy session, three other sessions of their choice and lunch for $10. Space is limited and on a first come first serve basis.
