Campus Preview Days Oct. 19-21

Admissions will be hosting Campus Preview Days October 19-21. We are expecting over 450 prospective students to be visiting campus. Students will be touring campus, meeting with faculty, and learning more about MSU Moorhead and our campus community. ‘Not Your Festival Wear: Fashion and Cultural Appropriation’ Panel Discussion

This student-led panel discussion will examine recent fashion and pop culture trends that “borrow” inspiration from other cultures in an increasingly globalized world, especially when it comes to women’s fashion. Student panelists will address tough questions like: what does it really mean to appropriate something from another culture? How is appropriation fueled by women’s fashions and “white feminism”? And how we can more respectfully engage other cultures? Discussion will be followed by Q&A. Voices of Muslim Women Film Night

On Wednesday, Oct. 25, the Women’s Center and Women’s and Gender Studies Program are co-sponsoring a screening of two short documentary films by and about Muslim women navigating different laws and customs governing self-expression around the world, especially when it comes to the hijab (or veil). The screening will be followed by discussion led by Hamida Dakane of Fargo’s Afro-American Development Association and MSUM senior Ruweyda Mohamed.

‘Phantom of the Opera’ screening with live organ accomaniment

MSUM’s School of Media Arts & Design and the Red River Chapter of the American Theatre Organ Society present a screening of the 1925 Classic Silent Horror film, “The Phantom of the Opera” starring Lon Chaney, accompanied by a live organ score. Warning Signs: Recognizing Intimate Partner Abuse

For Domestic Violence Awareness Month, join Women’s Center Coordinator Dana Bisignani and learn to recognize the warning signs of power-based personal violence that lead to unhealthy relationships. We’ll learn to spot patterns of verbal abuse, coercion, and other problematic behaviors — many normalized in romantic comedies and other pop culture — before they escalate into emotional, physical, or sexual abuse. We’ll also discuss how to support someone who is experiencing or trying to escape an abusive partner and resources. This talk is inclusive of and open to students of any gender identity and sexual orientation.
