MSUM Percussion Ensemble to perform Steve Reich masterwork

As a part of the MSUM Freshman/Transfer Scholarship Audition Day this Friday, the MSUM Percussion Ensemble will present an open rehearsal/performance of Steve Reich’s epic masterwork “Music for Mallet Instruments, Voices, and Organ” in the Center for the Arts Art Gallery from 1:30-2:20 p.m. Come listen to this gentle, flowing work which begs the listener to practice “deep listening” to a variety of slowly shifting musical tambres. President Blackhurst, VP for Finance & Administration Hollaar testify on behalf of Minnesota state budget request

Yesterday, President Anne Blackhurst and Vice President for Finance and Administration Jean Hollaar testified to the House Higher Education and Career Readiness Policy and Finance Committee on behalf of the Minnesota State budget request. You can watch their testimony online. Their testimony begins approximately 13 minutes into the video.

Today, President Blackhurst and VP Hollaar will testify to the Senate Higher Education Finance and Policy Committee at 1 p.m.

Planetarium, Physics & Astronomy awarded Eclipse Outreach Grant

Sara Schultz, Planetarium Director, and Juan Cabanela, Physics/Astronomy Faculty, have been awarded an American Astronomical Society (AAS) grant to support 2017 Great North American Eclipse outreach. The grant will include partnerships with YES School, FM Boys & Girls Club, YMCA, CHARISM, and the public libraries of Fargo and West Fargo. It will support the purchase of solar scopes and eclipse model kits for each participating organization as well as a planetarium show on the physics behind and safe viewing techniques of a Solar Eclipse.

The Great American Solar Eclipse will happen on August 21, 2017. The entire U.S. will be able to see some degree of solar eclipse (where the Moon blocks out some or all of the Sun) while a narrow band stretching from Oregon to South Carolina will experience a TOTAL eclipse. Invisible Chaos

“Invisible Chaos” tonight! Students speakers will be sharing their personal stories of how they have struggled with mental health issues. In addition, a panel comprised of faculty and students will be answering questions as to how one might receive help if they are facing a mental health issue like depression, anxiety, or an eating disorder.

“Invisible Chaos” will be held from 7:30-9 p.m. in Weld Hall. Sponsored by Lutheran Campus Ministry. Refreshments will be served. There is no cost to attend.

Rock Wall belay classes offered at the Wellness Center

The MSUM Wellness Center will be offering belay classes in the rock wall on March 18 and 19. Cost is $20 for students and $30 for community members. The classes will teach participants how to belay (hold people up on the wall with the rope), spot people on the boulder wall, and various other safety procedures. If you are interested, stop in the Wellness Center to sign up. We can’t wait to see you there!

The Minnesota State University Moorhead men’s basketball team opens the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference/Sanford Health tournament at home on Wednesday. MSUM, the top seed from the north division, plays host to Concordia-St. Paul at 8 p.m.

The Minnesota State University Moorhead women’s basketball team opens the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference/Sanford Health tournament at home on Wednesday. MSUM, the top seed from the north division, plays host to Southwest Minnesota State at 6 p.m.

MSUM to host first juried interactive art exhibition: Sen5es

Minnesota State University Moorhead is proud to announce its first juried interactive art exhibition: Sen5es.

The School of Art is calling on artists to create and submit artwork that engages at least two of the 5 traditional senses—sight, touch, taste, smell and hearing. All submitted artworks should be designed to be interacted with and experienced by the viewer.
