F/M Communiversity Class Features MSUM’s Terry Shoptaugh
“The Greatest Generation in the Red River Valley” with MSUM’s Terry Shoptaugh will be held Saturdays, January 9, 16, 23 & 30 from 2-4 p.m. at Waterford at Harwood Groves, 1200 Harwood Drive, Fargo. Class fee is $48.
This course will review the World War II years (1941-45) with a specific focus on how the war affected the people living in the Red River Valley. This includes residents who fought in the war and residents who lived through the war years on the ‘home front.’ Using newspapers, church records, local documents and interviews conducted with over 50 individuals, the instructor will highlight the major events of the war by personal stories told by some of these who experienced it. The impact of the war years on the lives of those who lived through it and the influence these years have had on subsequent decades will be the focus of discussions in the course.
Terry Shoptaugh, archivist at MSUM, has taught numerous American History classes at MSUM. He is the author of three books, including the recent “You Have Been Kind Enough to Assist Me: Herman Stern and the German-Jewish Crisis” (2008). He has recently completed a book-length study of the 164th Infantry Regiment (North Dakota National Guard) and the experiences of its soldiers in World War II, based on interviews with about fifty of the veterans.
