Walter Sizer and Wayne Chen, both Mathematics, attended the spring meeting of the North Central Section of the Mathematical Association of America April 15-16 at Carleton College. Wally Sizer made the presentation, “Period Two Solution to some Systems of Rational Difference Equations.”
Leslie Chapman ’76 (mathematics), chief risk officer and chief actuary at Securian Financial Group, was promoted to senior vice president. Chapman joined Securian in 1976 as an actuarial trainee. She is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries. Chapman was profiled in the Winter 2011 Alumnews.
Mathematics senior Jonathan Rue gave a talk at the meeting of the North Central Section of the Mathematical Association of America on Oct. 23. Jon spoke about his research on Permutation Statistics and q-Gibonacci Numbers. Jon’s talk was well received by the conference attendees. In addition to Jon, the University was well represented by students and faculty members.
Walter Sizer, Mathematics, had the paper “Further Instances of Periodicity in May’s Host Parasitoid Equation” published recently in Fasciculi Mathematici.
Sayel Ali, Mathematics, attended MathFest 2010 held in Pittsburgh, Pa., August 5-7. At this conference he presented a paper titled, “The Phi-Ratio Test.” He also moderated one of the sessions at this conference.
