Welcome to the #DragonFamily: Jess McCullough
Meet MSUM’s new assistant professor in History, Languages, Critical Race, Women’s Studies Jess McCullough. He is excited to share his knowledge of Medieval Europe and his experience in archeology with his students!
Start date: August 26, 2019
Q: What drew you to MSUM?
A: I was looking at several history positions and MSUM was one I knew had a pretty robust history and archeology presence. On top of that, I am a Medievalist and a Viking specialist so the Hjemkomst Center being right here with the replica Stave Church and longship. The on-going Scandinavian Heritage in the area demonstrated that there would be a lot of opportunity for me to get out and engage with the community.
Q: What unique experiences or skills do you bring to MSUM?
A: I have been on a dig in western Scotland in 2012 and I am an old-world archeologist. I do medieval Europe and that would be one thing that I bring. A material culture and history perspective that is more medieval European.
Q: What energizes you at work?
A: Being in the zone. Whether you’re in class or doing research, and that moment when it all starts to click. That is sometimes easier to reach than other times. If your students are engaging and we’re having a good conversation, it makes everything click so much better.
Q: If you could choose a superpower, what would it be?
A: The ability to manipulate time so I can have more hours in the day to finish my writing and all my grading or in some cases, speed it up.
Q: What is one thing people don’t know about you?
A: When I was younger, I took third in a celebrity look-alike contest. I’ll leave it at that and let people guess which celebrity.
Welcome to the #DragonFamily, Dr. McCullough. We are excited you are here!
