Accessibility Tip: Prepare Now for the DOJ Digital Accessibility Deadline
The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has finalized new requirements under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) that apply to public universities. These rules require that digital content — including websites, documents, videos, online forms, and course materials — be accessible to people with disabilities.
Key Compliance Deadline:
April 24, 2026
By this date, our digital content must meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA accessibility standards.
What This Means for Faculty and Staff
Anyone who creates, uploads, or maintains digital content plays a role in meeting these requirements. This includes common materials such as:
- Faculty syllabi and course materials (readings, slides, assignments, quizzes)
- Documents and PDFs shared with students or the campus community
- Videos and audio content, including recorded lectures and captions
- Web pages and online forms
- Emails, announcements, and event information
- Any digital content you share with others
Accessibility is not a one-time fix — new and updated content must remain accessible moving forward, and existing content should be reviewed and improved over time.
Required Annual Training
To support campus-wide compliance, the Required Annual Training now includes a course titled Digital Accessibility Foundations.
- Training due: March 31, 2026
- The course introduces core accessibility concepts and practical steps you can apply to everyday work, including documents, web content, and instructional materials.
Completing this training is an important step toward meeting the DOJ deadline and ensuring our digital content is usable by everyone.
