Dr. Caitlin Johnson published in the Northern Plains Ethics Journal

Dr. Caitlin Johnson from the Department of Leadership & Learning published an article titled “The Call of the Unicorn: Supporting Native American Students and Why it Matters” in the Northern Plains Ethics Journal (NPEJ), which is the first peer-reviewed ethics and philosophy journal in North Dakota.  The NPEJ’s mission is to create a high-quality dedicated publication platform to promote democratic participation in social and ethical issues affecting the Northern Plains and beyond.

Dr. Johnson’s article focuses on the issue of the educational equity gap with Native American students, as Native American students comprise less than 1% of the undergraduate and graduate student population in the United States.  She uses storytelling and culturally responsive andragogy as a conceptual framework to shape her argument for multi-ethnic educational approaches to support Indigenous students to help promote a sense of belonging and community for all students in higher education.

The Northern Plains Ethics Journal is an open-access journal.  The Fall 2023 Issue with Dr. Johnson’s article can be found here: Fall_2023_Edition_NPEJ.pdf (ndsu.edu).
