MSUM hosts first Sports Communication Conference
MSUM hosts the region’s first Sports Communication Conference Thursday, Oct. 22, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Comstock Memorial Union and Nemzek Fieldhouse. The conference, open to all area high school and college students, explores the fastest growing careers in sports. Students can meet and network with the area’s top sports communication professionals and learn what happens behind the scenes at sporting events.
The free conference includes nine 45-minute morning breakout sessions. Topics include: promotion and public relations, new media/social media, technology and producing, writing and reporting, broadcasting and entrepreneurship. Afternoon sessions provide hands-on demonstrations of fan engagement, TV and radio broadcasts and sports photography.
Dave Mona, host of WCCO’s Sports Huddle with Sid Hartman and former CEO of Weber Shandwick, the largest public relations firm in the Twin Cities, is the keynote speaker. Mona is the recipient of Associated Press and Edward R Murrow Awards for his broadcasting work. He was instrumental in bringing the Final Four Tournament and Super Bowl game to the Twin Cities. His book “Beyond the Sports Huddle: Mona on Minnesota” became a regional best seller in 2008. mnstate.edu/sports-conference
