Gates presented at National Black Families conference

Claudia Gates, School of Teaching and Learning, shared the content of a presentation titled “Familiar Unfamiliar: Teaching Students of Color to Use Familiar Organizers to Navigate Unfamiliar Information” at the 2015 National Black Families, Black Relationships, and Black Sexuality Conference in Philadelphia.

Gates discussed how The Critical Race Theory influences the educational process and inequalities that black children experience in the school systems. In addition, she demonstrated how children can use expository texts to learn new concepts and succeed in a collegiate classroom.
