Retired MSUM Professor presents new book “Red River Floods” at Hjemkomst Center

Moorhead, MN (WDAY/WDAZ TV) – You know the old saying, a picture says one thousand words? Well that’s what one author is hoping to do with his new book.

Historian and retired MSUM professor Dr. Terry Shoptaugh presented his book titled “Red River Floods” at the Hjemkomst Center today in Moorhead. The book has more than 200 images detailing the changing waters in the area since 1871.

During the presentation, Shoptaugh answered questions about the flood and explained the history behind some of the pictures in the book.

Dr. Terry Shoptaugh/”Red River Flood” Author, “It was very different back in the 1920s and 1930s for example. They didn’t really start building dikes until the 1950s and we have a lot of photographs of that in the book. You just see how people cope with this on going natural challenge.”

Shoptaugh’s book is available for purchase online and at several area book shops.
