The university community is cordially invited to hear fall semester MFA graduates Kari Brady (Creative Nonfiction) and Hayley Burdett (Fiction & Certificate in Publishing) read from their work on Wednesday, December 19, from 7:00-9:00 p.m., at The Spirit Room, 111 Broadway, in Fargo. A reception will follow the readings. The event is free and open to the public.
A public reading from their thesis culminates a program of study (typically three-years of post-baccalaureate study) for all MFA students.
The MFA is a terminal degree—the highest degree in its field—allowing students to study the art and craft of writing, while preparing for careers in teaching and writing-related professions.
Now in its 18th year, the MFA program has graduated more than 85 students. With its first two graduates in spring 1997, the MFA program has attracted students from California, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, New Mexico, Michigan, Montana, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Wisconsin, as well as from Canada and Jamaica.
MSUM MFA graduates work as writers in various locales, including universities, hospitals, and corporations. MSUM MFA grads have gone on to earn MA and Ph.D. degrees; teach writing and literature and hold administrative positions in high schools, community colleges, technical colleges, and universities; work as writers and editors of magazines, newspapers, and publishing companies; manage web content and communications strategies for businesses and universities; direct Alumni Affairs for Teach for America; work in marketing, advertising, and public relations positions for private, public, and nonprofit agencies; direct study abroad programs; develop successful freelance writing businesses; and work as marketing directors for banks. Most public, private, and proprietary colleges, in the F-M area currently employ MSUM MFA graduates as writing specialists or administrators. Indeed, the MFA degree has proven to be a versatile degree.
Please join us in celebrating Kari and Haley’s accomplishments!
