Combined Charities Campaign: Why I Give

Why do MSUM employees participate in the Combined Charities Campaign? Here are three answers to that question.

“I know what it feels like to not have “enough” to meet the basic needs of my family; needs like food, medical care, housing. I want to help soothe that feeling of fear and despair.” – Jenenne Guffey, Psychology/AMCS

“Last year I met a young woman who had run away from an abusive home situation (largely due to her gender and her sexual orientation). She was homeless and unemployed. She had no place to go. The YWCA took her in and gave her housing, at no cost to her. For this reason I decided to donate $5/month to the Cass County YWCA last year. Although things can be tight for me at the end of a pay period, I don’t miss $5, and even that small amount can make a world of difference.” – Raymond Rea, Film Studies

“I give because of the need in our community.  I am grateful for my job at MSUM and giving through payroll deduction is easy. Knowing we have children who go hungry or elderly individuals who need assistance affects us all. The programs funded by United Way are pretty amazing when you learn the facts and the impact those programs are making.” – Karen Mehnert-Meland, CMU

In the past few years, each year at least 250 employees on this campus have been a part of the Combined Charities Campaign. Each has his or her own reasons for giving. Each is motivated by something different. If you haven’t made your contribution yet, think about what motivates you to share what you have with others. Act on that motivation right now by going to the Employee Self-Service website to set up your payroll deduction. Or, complete a CCC-OneTimeDonation2011-12 form and send it to Human Resources.

The Campaign deadline for is Monday, October 31—just a few days away. For those of you who have already made your pledge/donation, THANK YOU.

If you have any questions contact one of the Campaign committee members: Deb Lewis (lewisd@mnstate.edu), Peg Potter (potter@mnstate.edu), or Andy Scott (scotta@mnstate.edu).

Together we DO make a difference.
