Suzzanne Kelley to present “Historians in Stitches” Feb. 24
Suzzanne Kelley, managing editor of New Rivers Press and instructor for the certificate in publishing offered through the English and Mass Communication departments, will co-present “Historians in Stitches: Exploring New Zealand through Material Culture” as an invited lecturer to the World iView Speaker Series—Spring 2011. The talk, free and open to the public, is Thursday, Feb. 24 from noon to 1 p.m. in the NDSU Memorial Union, Meadowlark Room.

Historians in Stitches: Exploring New Zealand through Material Culture
This presentation of research will focus on a region in Central Otago in the high country near the south end of the South Island where Suzzanne Kelley, Ph.D., and Thomas Isern, University Distinguished Professor, have been conducting a long-term regional study. Kelley and Isern will discuss one of their most interesting finds–kneelers made by the women of the Tarras Church. These handcrafted histories depict scenes and symbols of the country’s history, selected and rendered by the women of the parish. Each of these relics of material culture is a vehicle for the exploration of history and culture, leading us to stories of human interest and cultural complexity.
