Art student receives prestigious scholarship to study abroad

MSUM student Daniel Lang received a $5,000 Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship from the Institute of International Education (IIE) to participate in a study abroad program. Lang is one of 1,000 American undergraduate students from more than 380 colleges and universities to receive the award. Lang, an Art and Design major originally from Duluth, Minn., will participate in MSUM’s Eurospring program this spring.

Lang says the scholarship provides him the opportunity to explore his life-long interests in the art, history, and culture of the United Kingdom and Europe, as well as the cultures that influenced them. He will shoot photographs throughout the semester and present the work as a visual narrative upon his return.

The Gilman scholarship program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. According to IIE President Allan Goodman, “International education is one of the best tools for developing mutual understanding and building connections between people from different countries. It is critical to the success of American diplomacy and business, and the lasting ties that Americans make during their international studies are important to our country in times of conflict as well as times of peace.”
