In May/June 2018, MSUM alumni, family and friends will be taking a one-of-a-kind, 10-day tour of the Emerald Isle with MSUM Professor Dr. Jeremy Carney. This unique trip will combine some of the best cultural experiences that Ireland has to offer with an educational adventure into the ancient and modern sociopolitical history that has divided the island.

‘Peace, Reconciliation and Restorative Justice’ study abroad course

Professors Jeremy Carney and Geraldine Hendrix-Sloan are offering a study abroad course in Ireland titled, “Peace, Reconciliation and Restorative Justice” during Spring semester. Travel will take place for 16 days in May 2018. If you would like to learn more about this program, please attend either of the following informational meetings on September 27: 12 noon in Lommen Hall 101 or 4:30 p.m. in Lommen 203.

Faculty interested in leading short-term courses abroad have the option of using an external provider for assistance with logistics and planning. One such provider, EF College Study Tours, will hold an information session on Friday, Sept. 15 at 11 a.m. in the Faculty Development Center in the Library. All interested faculty are invited to attend to hear about options and the services EF provides. The Director of Study Abroad will also be present to answer questions.

Come to the Faculty Development Center in LI 124 on Thursday, Sept. 7 at noon, or Friday, Sept. 8 at 1 p.m. Faculty who have led such programs previously will be present to answer questions; the event is hosted by the Office of Study Abroad. Refreshments will be served.

Drs. Dosch, Paul lead study abroad course in Dominican Republic

Study in Tanzania this summer, earn undergraduate or graduate-level credits

ANTH 490/STL 490/590 Health, Education, and Environment in Tanzania Today will be a unique immersive, experiential educational opportunity focused on the challenges of delivering basic healthcare and education to the diverse population of a rapidly developing nation.This program is open to students of all majors. Tentative dates are June 4-24, 2017.

Alumnus Ryan Sylvester to present on Boren Awards program

MSUM alumnus Ryan Sylvester will present information on the National Security Education Program-David L. Boren Awards. This program is designed to bring a diverse range of people (by academic discipline) into national security public service. These grants allow U.S. graduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests, and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East.  In exchange for funding, Boren Fellows commit to working in the federal government for at least one year after graduation.  Read the rest of this entry →

Passport drive on March 16

Do you need a passport? The passport drive is this Thursday, March 16, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Flora Frick seating area. This one-stop shop features help from the Moorhead Post Office’s passport specialist, photos taken on-site, and all needed forms.

Bring a certified copy of your birth certificate, an additional state-issued photo ID (such as a driver’s license), and payment by check or money order ($110 to US State Department, $25 to USPS, and $5 cash or check to MSUM for photos).

Faculty led study-abroad course information sessions

Faculty interested in leading short-term study abroad courses in 2018 are invited to information sessions. The process from beginning to end will be covered, with handouts and resources available. These sessions are for both experienced faculty leaders and those new to the process.

The sessions will be held in the Faculty Development Center in the Library on Wednesday, March 1 at 1 p.m., and Thursday, March 2 at 2 p.m. If you are unable to attend one of these sessions please contact Janet Haak, Director of Study Abroad, to set up an individual meeting.

The deadline for proposals is Monday, April 3.

Passport drive Feb. 28

Do you need a Passport? Come to the Passport Drive on Tuesday, Feb. 28 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Flora Frick seating area. You’ll need a driver’s license, a certified copy of your birth certificate (not a photocopy), and two checks. Photos will be taken on-site and are $5 (cash or check only).

Gilman Scholarship information meetings

Did you know: students who receive PELL grants as part of their financial aid are eligible to apply for the Gilman Scholarship for study abroad. MSUM students have received $5,000 from this program in the past.

If you are curious about funding study abroad and you receive a PELL grant, come to a Gilman Scholarship information meeting on Monday, Feb. 6 at 4 p.m. in CMU 214, or on Tuesday, Feb. 7 at noon in MA 169. A student recipient of the Gilman scholarship and the Director of Study Abroad will be there to answer all of your questions.

If you are curious about studying abroad, stop by an information table for starters. Student workers who have been abroad will provide you with options and next steps in your journey. Tuesday, Feb. 7 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Flora Frick seating area, and Thursday, Feb. 9 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the CMU across from the C-Store.

Two external providers, USAC and API, will be on campus Wednesday, Feb. 8 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the CMU.

Study abroad in the Dominican Republic

Join Dr. Mary Dosch and Dr. David Paul on a study abroad to the Dominican Republic, May 15-26, 2017. This is a 12-day summer course. For the first half of the tour, we will be involved in service learning activities and for the second part of our tour, we will be participating in cultural activities, such as visiting caves with waterfalls, whitewater rafting, visiting Christopher Columbus’ tomb, and riding horseback on the beach.
