Alumnus gives MSUM $866K

A Minnesota State University Moorhead alumnus who died last year has given more than $860,000 for student scholarships. Julien Burkness, a 1935 graduate who captained the university’s only undefeated football team, bequeathed $866,000 to MSUM for academic and athletic scholarships. The gift is among the top five largest donations MSUM has ever received, said Joan Justesen, vice president of the MSUM Alumni Foundation. The largest is $2 million. MSUM alum, Moorhead educator named Teacher of the Year

Moorhead teacher Ronda Buysse has an unusual gig. She works with the district’s youngest pupils, usually ages 3 or 4. Those are also the youngsters poised to face some of the steepest hurdles in their school careers, and it’s Buysse’s job to give them an early momentum. Buysse, Moorhead’s latest Teacher of the Year, is a veteran of Moorhead’s Early Intervention Services, the district’s team fulfilling a state mandate to educate children with disabilities starting at birth. Lost in Meritocracy Book Talk Feb. 23

In this hilarious memoir, Kirn recounts the ways that the American educational rat race betrayed him. He ends up miserable at Princeton, bullied by rich roommates and ashamed of his Minnesota upbringing. He majors in English because it sounds like something her already knows and applies for a Rhodes scholarship while on speed… Kirn throws spit wads at his Ivy League education, but with six works of fiction to his name as well as regular bylines in prestigious publications, perhaps he was well served by the meritocracy after all. (From The Washington Post, 2009.) Join us for conversation about Kirn’s book and how it provides an intriguing frame to look at higher education Tuesday, Feb. 23 from noon to 1 p.m. in CMU 227. Presenters: Peg Potter, Psychology and Steve Bolduc, Economics. Students always welcome.

Dragon Jobs update

We are in the process of re-doing the Dragon Jobs website. It seems some students have been on the ball and applied for positions that are not available but listed on the website. These will be cleaned up hopefully by the end of today so you shouldn’t be receiving any online applications from students. We are sorry for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience.
