Synthetic Brains: Technology in the 21st Century–Revenge of the Nerds”
Presentor: Dr. Alice Parker, Professor of Electrical Engineering, University of Southern California
Sept 24th, 2009 – NDSU Memorial Union Ballroom at 12:30 p.m.
Dr. Parker’s team researches the feasibility of creating a synthetic brain with the use of carbon nanotubes. Their research focuses upon how to emulate pieces of the brain, such as synthetic vision system or synthetic cochlea. The team works on mathematical models that reflect the connections of the brain’s neurons and will demonstrate how the neurons communicate with each other. The nanotube, according to Parker, is an ideal material to emulate brain function because its 3-D structure allows connectivity in all directions. Dr. Parker’s research is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF).
