MSUM Students Win Big in NDPC Contest

Winners of the 2009 North Dakota Professional Communicators College Communications Contest were recognized at the state conference May 2 in Bismarck. More than 100 college students and teams from 7 North Dakota and Minnesota schools participated in the annual competition.

Communications professionals in each field judged more than 120 entries from student journalists, editors, broadcasters, photographers, designers and writers. A total of 90 awards were presented in 34 categories. MSUM students collected one-third of the total awards.

The contest is open to any student enrolled in at least a two-year college or university in North Dakota or Moorhead, Minn. Judges, selected for their professional expertise in each field, critique entries and provide students with feedback.

Investigative/In-depth: “ND Convention Coverage,” Rebecca Gilbuena, Nathan Aamodt and Tim Gerszewski, 1st place; “Obama Skit Controversy,” Trista Jetvig and Kyle Johnson, 2nd place; “Guns on Campus,” Michael Quinn, 3rd place (tie); “Student in the Guard,” Whitney Hay, 3rd place (tie).

Feature Reporting: “Composers Concert,” Ryan Kotschevar, 1st place; “Soldier’s Legacy Lives On,” Rebecca Gilbuena, 2nd place (tie); “A Lesson in Perspective,” Kit Cross, honorable mention.

General Sports Reporting: “Softball Pitcher Returns,” Todd Kurtz, 1st place; “NDSU Men’s Basketball,” C.J. Peirre, 3rd place; “NDSU Women’s Senior,” Tim Frie, honorable mention.

Feature Sports Reporting: “MSUM Swimming and Diving,” C.J. Peirre, 2nd place; “Dragon Brothers,” Tim Frie, 3rd place; “Athletic Trainer,” Todd Kurtz, honorable mention.

Special Programming:

The Kayak Lady,” Broadcast Documentary Class – Directors Kit Cross & Patrick Joyner, 1st place.
