For two years, MSUM Art Professor Brad Bachmeier has been leading a project to install several large-scale brick sculptures at a new skate and bike park in the Golden Ridge community at Madison Park in North Fargo. The community is one of the most diverse and economically challenged in the FM metro area. The project involved collaboration with the Legacy Children’s Foundation, City of Fargo, Fargo Parks and Madison Elementary school children to help celebrate diversity through art and create ownership for community members in the park. FARGO – Just as North Dakota State will soon have the Scheels Center, Minnesota State Moorhead will soon see a Scheels Field, the result of a $1 million donation announced Wednesday.

The donation is part of MSUM’s Laps for the Long Run campaign, which was announced last week as a fundraiser for merit-based student scholarships. The university’s new president, Anne Blackhurst, personally donated $50,000.
The $1 million donation, presented by Steve Scheel, CEO of Scheels, will not go toward scholarships, but to a new football field with artificial turf.

Construction is planned next summer following the 2014-15 school year so that it does not conflict with student activities, said football coach Steve Laqua. Read the rest of this entry →

Scheels supports MSUM’s Laps for the Long Run with $1 million pledge

Posted on August 28, 2014

A fundraising challenge at Minnesota State University Moorhead has attracted its first major gift with a $1 million pledge from Scheels. The challenge, Laps for the Long Run, was announced Aug. 20 as an event in honor of the inauguration of MSUM Pres. Anne Blackhurst.  Blackhurst will run 12.5 miles, or 50 laps, around the Ron Masanz track at Nemzek Fieldhouse and has personally pledged $1,000 per lap, or $50,000, to start the challenge.

Yesterday, Steve Scheel, CEO of Scheels, accepted the challenge by pledging $20,000 per lap for every lap up to 50 that Blackhurst runs during the Homecoming Week event.

“SCHEELS has been a good partner with NDSU and Concordia over the years and we look forward to partnering with MSUM and President Blackhurst, to help MSUM become a stronger player in our community of Fargo-Moorhead,” said Steve Scheel. Read the rest of this entry →
