It’s More Than Just A Game: MSUM to Host 2019 Sports Conference

Speakers ranging from 10-time X Games Gold Medalists to FM Redhawks will describe the impact sports have had on them

Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM) presents its 2019 Sports Communication Conference, “Kicking It! Minnesota United Meets MSUM,” 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesday, October 23, at the Comstock Memorial Union. The conference, free and open to all area high school and college students, explores the fastest-growing careers in sports. Students will meet and network with top sports communication professionals and learn what happens behind the scenes at sporting events.

Chris Wright, CEO of Minnesota United Football Club, will present the keynote speech. Even though Wright spent the last 26 years with the Timberwolves and Minnesota Lynx, his first love is soccer. His speech will focus on bringing professional soccer to the state of Minnesota.

Tucker Hibbert, 10-time X Games Gold Medalist and 2-time World Champion in SnoCross will also be featured during the conference. Hibbert will discuss the lessons he learned as a professional racer. He will be accompanied by MSUM alumna and sports marketing professional Mandi Johnson-Hibbert.

Additional sports communication professionals will also present workshops during the conference, including but not limited to Cole Milberger (FM Redhawks), Sherri Schmidt (Scheels), Whitney Baumgartner (Fargo Force), and Mark Knutson (GoFar Events).

The free conference includes several breakout sessions covering sports mascots and community engagement, corporate sponsorships, conservation in outdoor sport, developing community-wide sports events, students as MVPs on game day, and sports announcing.

Registration for the free event is now open at mnstate.edu/sports-conference.

The MSUM Sports Conference is sponsored by the MSUM School of Communication and Journalism, the Marcil Center for Innovative Journalism, and Forum Communications Company.
