MSUM Marketing & Communications wins two gold Addys, one silver

MSUM’s Marketing & Communications team took home two gold Addys and one silver for the re-branded “Moorhead Magazine.”

The Addy Awards, put on by the American Advertising Federation of North Dakota, took place Friday, Feb. 28 at the Holiday Inn in Fargo.

Graphic communications alum designs paint scheme for Daytona 500 racecar

Dan Nisbet, 2007 graphic communications alum, designed the paint scheme for a car that will be driven in the Daytona 500 on Sunday.

Nisbet designed the paint scheme and logo placement for Car #26, driven by Cole Whitt, pictured below. Since 2005, Nisbet has been working with CM2 Concepts, a firm that does design work for the NASCAR, IndyCar, and NHRA racing series. Working with another designer, he created the paint scheme for the car, which includes sponsor logo placement and the colors and graphics that go across the cars. Computer models show the teams and sponsors the final appearance of the car before a giant decal is printed that wraps around the car. Read the rest of this entry →

Positive Reactions is a student-run public relations firm that is associated with the MSUM PRSSA Chapter. Any member of our PRSSA Chapter can work for the firm (this is where you get the field experience). Now you can receive 1-3 course credits for doing so by registering for MC290 or MC390. Positive Reactions works with real clients of the Fargo-Moorhead area and provides public relations services for them.

MSUM mass communications students create SAC “Preview Guide”

Mass communications students gained practical experience by publishing this year’s “Student Academic Conference Preview Guide.”

Due to budget restrictions, Student Academic Conference organizers and two mass communications professors turned this year’s guide into a service-learning project. A copy editing class, desktop publishing class and an apprentice honors scholar teamed up to create the SAC “Preview Guide.” The Student Academic Conference will be held Tuesday, April 17 at the Comstock Memorial Union. MSUM students sweep ADDY Awards

Every year at the AAF-ND Addy Awards, MSUM students are recognized for their talent and knowledge in advertising and design. This year was no different. Thirty-seven students from M State, UND and MSUM submitted advertising work for judging in 16 student categories, and MSUM’s art and design and mass communications students took home awards in every category. The categories ranged from editorial design to mixed media campaigns.

Insulated shutter design competition

The Sustainable Campus Initiative Committee (SCIC) will finance a competition open to all MSUM students for developing the best design for insulated shutters or insulated blinds to cover the windows on Murray Commons. The winner of the competition will win the prize money of $3000. If the winning design is accepted by MSU Moorhead’s facilities administration and MnSCU administration, the shutters/blinds will be installed during fall semester 2010 or the spring semester 2011. The student winner will supervise the installation.

In most buildings in the Northern part of the USA the heat loss through the windows is from 40 to 90 percent of the building’s total heat loss. Nationwide, very little attention has been given to find a solution to this problem. Over the next few years, as energy becomes more expensive, insulated shutters or blinds will become the norm on both commercial buildings and residential housing. The SCIC, in the interest of energy conservation at MSUM and promotinga lifestyle of energy sustainability among students, will finance this competition as a demonstration project during the 2010-2011 school year.
