The 2013 Take Back the Night Event will take place Thursday, Sept. 19, on the campus mall. The event will start at 5:30 p.m. with a free barbecue in front of the Science Laboratory. This will be followed at 6:15 p.m. with a program that will include speakers, music, and more. Following the program, there will be a march around campus to show solidarity with victims of sexual and domestic violence. The event will conclude with a candlelight vigil. Dr. Lisa Weasel, a biologist and interdisciplinary scholar whose work seeks to connect science and social justice, gives a public talk at Minnesota State University Moorhead Monday, March 4 at 7 p.m. in Science Lab 118 to celebrate Women’s History Month. Weasel will be speaking about “Embodying Intersectionality: Feminist Perspectives on Health and Environment.”
Weasel’s interdisciplinary scholarship focuses on feminist science studies, environmental health, and food, ethics and sustainability. Winner of the esteemed CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation, Weasel is a valued affiliate of Project Kaleidoscope’s Faculty for the 21st Century and is the author of the book Food Fray: Inside the Controversy over Genetically Modified Food, and a co-editor of the anthology Feminist Science Studies: A New Generation. She is also a frequent speaker to community and educational groups on topics relating to the possible social repercussions of science and technology.
An avid advocate for women in science, Weasel received an A.B. manga cum laude in Biology from Harvard and her PhD in Cell and Molecular biology from the University of Cambridge. She is currently an Associate Professor of Biology at Portland State University. Read the rest of this entry →
