Martin Grindeland receives NBNA’s highest honor

Posted on April 04, 2014

Martin Grindeland, a professor in MSUM’s School of Communication and Journalism, was named this year’s winner of the Mitchell V. Charnley Award by the Northwest Broadcast News Association at the organization’s annual convention in the Twin Cities last weekend.

The Charnley Award was established in 1968 and is given each year to an individual working, or with roots, in the six-state NBNA region who has made outstanding contributions to the field of broadcast journalism. Previous winners include nationally known broadcasters such as Eric Sevaried and Tom Brokaw, along with regional names such as Marv Bossart and Al Aamodt.

NBNA President Matt Cullen said it was Grindeland’s many years of service to broadcast journalism that earned him the honor. “For more than four decades, Martin Grindeland has instilled the foundations of journalism along with the art of storytelling into numerous students and young professionals,” said Cullen. “His passion and his dedication to his students and to the journalism profession makes him an ideal recipient of this year’s Mitchell V. Charnley Award.”

The Northwest Broadcast News Association includes the states of Minnesota, North and South Dakota, Wisconsin, Nebraska and Iowa.

Erica’s actions truly exemplify the sort of integrity that we want in our teacher education majors. I am proud of Erica and our teacher education program at MSUM, and I believe that Erica is representative of the type of teacher we produce at MSUM.
