‘Peace, Reconciliation and Restorative Justice’ study abroad course

Professors Jeremy Carney and Geraldine Hendrix-Sloan are offering a study abroad course in Ireland titled, “Peace, Reconciliation and Restorative Justice” during Spring semester. Travel will take place for 16 days in May 2018. Percussion professor begins trio performances

Sunday, Oct. 8 | 7:30-9 p.m.

Dr. Kenyon Williams, Professor of Percussion at MSUM, performed Thursday evening at the Fergus Falls “Concert in the Park” series along with members of the Varying Degrees Trio: MSUM percussion alumni Tom Christianson and Lucas Bernier. The trio received a Jade Presents grant from the Arts Partnership to present a variety of performances throughout the Red River Valley area this fall. Aside from their performance in Fergus Falls, the trio will also perform in Bismarck, Jamestown, Fargo, and Detroit Lakes as in a variety of Performing Arts events, including a performance on the campus of MSUM on Sunday, Oct. 8 at 7:30 p.m.

Anti-Racism in Higher Education Training

The Office of Diversity and Inclusion is excited to host Debra Leigh from High Impact Training to facilitate two “Anti-Racism in Higher Education” training sessions for MSUM students. The training will cover the topics of diversity (what it is, why it is important), racism (what it is, where it comes from, different types), relevant concepts (privilege, bias, oppression, etc.), how to address and resolve conflict, how to navigate difficult conversations, how to be an effective ally, and bystander intervention.  Read the rest of this entry →

Fat Girls Hiking Body Love Workshop, Group Hike to Maplewood State Park

Do you need some body positive messaging in your life? Do you love being out in nature? Fat Girls Hiking co-founder Summer Michaud-Skog is coming to campus for two events:

  • Body Love Workshop (Thursday, Sept. 28, 3-4 p.m., Women’s Center) – focuses on joyful movement, self-care, the body love spectrum and our connection with nature and ourselves. Open to students of all body types and gender identities.
  • Group Hike at Maplewood State ParkMN (Friday, Sept. 29, 2-7 p.m.) – travel with Summer and continue the discussion about body positivity in this beautiful natural setting during fall’s peak. Transportation and snacks provided. Depart from CMU parking lot at 2 p.m. Open to students of all body types and gender identities. Hike is limited to 20 participants. Registration required. Dashain Night

Student Success Workshop: ‘Building Academic Relationships with Faculty’

More than just help with homework, professors can provide guidance about possible career paths, research and internship opportunities, and letters of recommendation – but only if they know you! In this workshop, Dana will share tips for getting the most out of interactions with faculty, asking for recommendations, and taking ownership of your education so you feel less awkward walking into office hours. Dana Bisignani is Coordinator of the Women’s Center and a faculty member in the Women’s and Gender Studies Program at MSUM.

Widmer Roel PC will be doing on-campus interviews in the Career Development Center for their Audit Internship on Thursday, October 5.

Affinity Plus bike giveaway winner

Last week we drew for the $500 bike giveaway at Affinity Plus MSUM branch and Miss Olivia Carlson was the big winner. Olivia is a student here and also a student employee of the library. She was so excited to be our winner.

Another reminder our MSUM campus scholarship is due by Sept. 30. One MSUM student will be awarded this scholarship.

MSUM to canvas Moorhead during September to support United Way Day of Caring

The United Way Day of Caring is a community-wide event, where United Way of Cass-Clay mobilizes volunteer teams of 3-6 people to assist people in need with a household project.

This is where MSUM comes in. During the month of September, MSUM will help United Way to canvas local Moorhead neighborhoods to spread the word about the Day of Caring Event and to help people in need register for help. MSUM is helping our local community while supporting the goal of United Way to ensure as many people as possible know about the event.

SoMAD Hosts 6th Annual Mixer

On Sept. 14, the School of Media Arts & Design hosted a student mixer in the Center for the Arts Great Hall. The annual event (now in its sixth year) was organized to increase collaboration and foster an atmosphere of continuing cooperation between students of SoMAD (Film, Animation, Graphic Communications, Graphic Design and Photography) and students of the School of Performing Arts. The event included pizza, pop, live music and an opportunity for students to be added to the SoMAD actor/talent database.
