Travis Dolence receives MERLOT award

Congratulations to the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities, and also to Travis Dolence, MSUM’s Distance Learning Librarian, for being recognized by MERLOT (the Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching) with a “MERLOT Outstanding Partner Award” for significant contributions and support to academic technologies and educational leadership. This award is reserved for partner institutions with a five-year history as a MERLOT Higher Education Partner or Affiliate. Dolence is on the Editorial Board for MERLOT’s Library and Information Services division. He’ll be attending the Sloan Consortium/MERLOT/MoodleMoot symposium, “Emerging Technologies for Online Learning,” July 20-23, 2010, in San Jose, Calif. MnSCU will be recognized during a special ceremony at the conference for its work with MERLOT.

Student Leadership Scholarship deadline April 2

Student leaders at a MnSCU University are encouraged to apply for the Jared P. Stene Student Leaders Scholarship, named in memory of a student leader at Winona State University who passed away in November 2007. The $500 scholarship is open to any major at any grade level and requires a minimum 2.5 GPA. Application deadline is April 2. Click headline for application information.

O’Brien appointed president of North Hennepin Community College

John O’Brien was appointed president of North Hennepin Community College in Brooklyn Park today by the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Board of Trustees.O’Brien, 47, is currently on leave from his position as academic vice president and chief academic officer at Century College to direct the “Students First” project, a Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system initiative to improve student services.
