MSUM English Language Tutor Program mentioned in U.S. News & World Report article

Minnesota State University Moorhead was mentioned in the U.S. News & World Report article, “U.S. College Tutoring Centers Help International Students,” published July 11.

MSUM’s English Language Tutor Program is referenced as a support service for international students to look for in a college or university.

“Some universities offer conversation partners who assist with English verbal communication skills. For example, Minnesota State University—Moorhead‘s English Language Tutor Program pairs international students with conversation partners. They meet together three to four hours per week to practice and improve their English-speaking skills, such as pronunciation, through conversation, according to the school’s website.”

Mark your calendars for the Celebration of Nations, held on April 1 in the CMU Ballroom at 4 p.m. Children’s World will commence followed by the main event at 6 p.m.

Come enjoy a night of entertainment, flag parade, food, culture, and fashions from around the world. MSUM students and community members representing a variety of countries will exhibit items from their homeland, cook their unique foods, and share their culture.

  • Entrance: $2 online at Tickets | $3 at the door
  • Kids under 5 years: Free
  • $1 food tickets (inside the Ballroom)

The event is open to all students, faculty, staff, community members and guests from all over the world and the U.S.

Dr. Mugi, Dr. Paul lead discussion on international student connections with faculty, student services

Dr. Charles Mugi, Psychology Department, and Dr. David Paul, Counseling and Student Affairs program, were invited to lead a discussion: Classroom Involvement for the students in the International Student Services Office. The purpose of the event was to help international students connect with faculty and student services here at MSUM. The afternoon event was held on Friday, Jan. 27 and organized by Adrienne Hamann and Kelsey Stacken, International Student Services Office.

International Day of the Girl Event

The International Student Organization in collaboration with a charity organization called African Soul American Heart are commemorating the International Day of the Girl on Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2016. The event will be in room 205 in the Comstock Memorial Union. It’s from 4-5:30 p.m.

MSUM Enrollment Up Based on 10th Day Numbers

Significant Gains in Graduate, International and New Freshmen 

Preliminary 10th day figures released this week show Minnesota State University Moorhead’s enrollment for new entering graduate students is up 31.7%, new entering domestic freshmen is up 21.8%, and new entering international students is up 10.9%. Overall total headcount for undergraduate and graduate students is up 1.5% while new entering transfer students is down 1.6%.  Read the rest of this entry →

International Student Services Update

International Student Services has been very busy over the summer.

We are finally at full staff after being down one employee for over a year. Our office consists of three full-time employees: Janet Hohenstein, Director; Adrienne Hamann, Assistant Director; and Kelsey Stacken, Admissions & SEVIS. Our office is currently located in CMU 120.

We admitted 539 international students this fall semester and out of 539 we currently have 121 that have arrived on campus. If you see them walking around campus looking lost please say hi or ask if they need assistance!  Read the rest of this entry →

Adrienne Hamann chosen as new Assistant Director of International Student Services

Hamann comes to us with a Bachelor of Arts in German, Masters of Arts Intercultural Relations from Lesley University, Cambridge MA. Hamann. She will be working with programming, advising, suspension,admissions and recruitment.

New Assistant Director of International Student Services named

Adrienne Hamann has accepted the position of Assistant Director of International Student Services.
Hamann comes to us with a Bachelor of Arts in German, Masters of Arts Intercultural Relations from Lesley University, Cambridge MA. Hamann brings experience from programming events to being a part of the probation and suspension meetings on her campus. Her expected start date will be April 4th.

MSUM visits China, South Korea in hopes of attracting more international students

Across the U.S., more international students than ever were enrolled last school year in a college or university. It’s a trend Minnesota State University Moorhead and Concordia College are hoping to replicate here.

The two Moorhead schools, which have seen sharply declining enrollment in the past five years, are actively working to expand their international presence. MSUM hopes to eventually have 10 to 12 percent of its students coming from abroad. It was at just under 8 percent last year. Read the rest of this entry →
