For 26 years, the Council on Staff Affairs (CSA) (made up of MSUM classified staff members) has worked to raise scholarship money for classified staff members and their families. We have awarded 265 scholarships totaling over $95,880 since 1980. This year’s application deadline is March 5, 2010. The Helen Roberti Charitable Trust has granted MSUM scholarship funds for American Indian students acquiring graduate and undergraduate degrees in such fields as law, medicine, education and other advanced degree vocations (All majors will be considered). Reminder that the Rainbow Christmas benefit event supporting MSUM’s Rainbow Scholarship, Minnkota Health Project, and the FM Pride Collective will be held Thursday, December 17th. There will be an auction and entertainment to raise funds for all three of these organizations. The event is being held at the I-Beam nightclub (1 block north of Hornbachers in Moorhead). A national survey says South Dakota is tops in the nation among college students graduating in debt, but 17th overall for the amount of that debt. In its survey “Student Debt and the Class of 2008,” the Berkley, Calif.-based Project on Student Debt, reports that national student debt rose an average of 6 percent a year between 2004 and 2008, from $18,600 in 2004 to $23,200 in 2008.
