International jazz, recording artist at MSUM March 4-5

reg Abate, jazz saxophonist, flutist, and composer, will conduct a masterclass and clinics when he visits MSUM Thursday and Friday, March 4-5. He will present a music business clinic at 3 p.m. Thursday; a jazz and saxophone clinic at 9:30 a.m. Friday; and a convocation and master-class at 3 p.m. Friday, all in the Roland Dille Center for the Arts Fox Recital Hall. These events are free and open to the public. At 8 p.m. Friday he will perform with The Simon Rowe Trio at Studio 222 at 222 Broadway, Fargo. Award-winning filmmaker visits MSUM

Award-winning filmmaker and festival programmer Skizz Cyzyk will be visiting the MSUM Film Studies department this week, Feb. 24-26. Since 1983, Cyzyk has made more than 50 films and videos, many having won awards and screened at festivals all over the world. Cyzyk is also a film festival programmer, serving as both advisory board and jury member for the Atlanta, Sidewalk Moving Picture, Maryland and Slamdance Film Festivals just to name a few. While at MSUM he will be visiting Film Studies classes and conducting workshops. Cyzyk will also be screening a variety of his work on Friday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. in King Hall 110. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

Lost in Meritocracy Book Talk Feb. 23

In this hilarious memoir, Kirn recounts the ways that the American educational rat race betrayed him. He ends up miserable at Princeton, bullied by rich roommates and ashamed of his Minnesota upbringing. He majors in English because it sounds like something her already knows and applies for a Rhodes scholarship while on speed… Kirn throws spit wads at his Ivy League education, but with six works of fiction to his name as well as regular bylines in prestigious publications, perhaps he was well served by the meritocracy after all.
