Circles of community contribute to students’ success
Six Ojibwe members and Belcourt (ND) School District employees earned their master’s degrees in curriculum & instruction last spring. The strong school district-MSUM partnership began with trust, led by MSUM’s Dr. Caitlin Johnson, an assistant professor of educational leadership.
The successful completion of their degrees required community support: Family and friends. Respective clans. School district employees, board members and students. Belcourt and Ojibwe communities. MSUM professors and peers.
“I am Native American and one of the things we talk about is that aspect of community and really wanting to be a helpful member of your community,” says Johnson.
Four of the six will enroll in the university’s EdD program, crediting their many communities for support.
