Moving Classes Online and Copyright
Normally, online classes would be subject to the TEACH Act rather than fair use, but in the case of moving face-to-face courses online, using fair use should be acceptable. For spring 2020, if you are moving a face-to-face course to online, continue using fair use and weighing your use against the four factors as you would with any face-to-face course. For more information about fair use and the four factors, see the Copyright Center: libguides.mnstate.edu/Copyright/fairuse.
If in the future, the course is designed to be online, you will need to utilize the TEACH Act Checklist available at the Copyright Center: libguides.mnstate.edu/Copyright/TeachAct.
If you have any questions or concerns about copyright in moving classes online, contact the Copyright Center at copyright@mnstate.edu.
