Philosophy Colloquium: Why a Metaphysics of Causation?

Wednesday, Feb. 27 | 4:30 p.m. | MacLean 167

Dr. Joe Bessie, of the MSUM Philosophy Department will present his colloquium: Why a Metaphysics of Causation? in MacLean Hall 167 on Wednesday, February 27 at 4:30 p.m.

The famous philosopher Bertrand Russell once wrote that “The law of causality, I believe, like much that passes muster among philosophers, is a relic of a bygone age, surviving, like the monarchy, only because it is erroneously supposed to do no harm.” Nevertheless the concepts of cause and effect have proved not only resistant to being eliminated, but in fact prove positively useful in science and everyday life. What has the philosopher to tell us about this fundamental concept—which the thinker David Hume referred to as “The Cement of the Universe,” i.e., the relationship that holds everything together? This introductory-level talk aims to shed some light on the matter.

All are welcome!
