Kavli Fulldome Lecture Series: The Warped Universe

The MSUM Planetarium will participate in a live simulcast lecture featuring Dr. Nergis Mavalvala, a Pakistani-American astrophysicist on Friday, Oct. 28 from 7:30-8:30 p.m. in the university’s Planetarium in Bridges Hall, room 167.
This event is part of the Kavli Fulldome Lecture Series and features Dr. Mavalvala talking about, “The Warped Universe: The 100 Year Quest to Detect Gravitational Waves.” She is a Professor of Astrophysics and the Associate Head of the Department of Physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
The Kavli Fulldome Lecture Series takes audiences on a journey to the edges of human knowledge. Experts at the Alder Planetarium and leading scientists work together to create dazzling, animated images of real data, which are projected onto the planetarium dome. What makes this event so unique is the fact that people in attendance will experience the lecture simultaneously with other locations across North America, Europe, South America and Africa.
Some of the most violent events in the universe spectacularly warp space-time, emitting gravitational waves. She will describe the 100 year search for these tiny ripples in space-time and what they can tell us about cosmic events that may be shrouded in darkness and date as far back in time as the earliest moments after the Big Bang.
