Words Mean Things: Chicanx/Latinx Terminology in the 21st Century

Thursday, Sept. 22 | 3:30-4:30 p.m. | CMU 121

Have you seen terms in the media or your textbooks and wondered why some people say Hispanic and others say Latino? Dr. Kandace Creel Falcón, Director of Women’s and Gender Studies, will discuss the socio-political history of the terms associated with Latina/o people. Tracing Hispanic to Latinx with stops on Chican@ and many more, we’ll focus on scholarly and activist debates on how Latinx folks are named and how we claim identities in this linguistic landscape.
