‘Divine Power and Its Paradoxes’ topic of philosophy talk

“Divine Power and Its Paradoxes: Can God Square the Circle?” is the topic of a Philosophy talk by Majid Amini of Virginia State University Thursday, October 6 at 7 p.m. in CMU 227.

In the Semitic tradition of religions, it is a conventional wisdom that God has the attribute of omnipotence. Yet, this classical monotheistic conception of the Divine has been bedeviled by a plethora of logical and metaphysical paradoxes. The purpose of the presentation is thus threefold: (1) survey the paradoxes of omnipotence, (2) look at traditional responses such as Thomas Aquinas’ to circumvent the paradoxical character of absolute or infinite power, and (3) consider and diagnose the insolubility of the paradox of omnipotence.
