As a trusted partner of Marriott and Hilton, he has not only built a thriving business but also helped shape the design of industry-leading properties. His unwavering commitment to quality has earned him multiple ‘Developer of the Year’ awards. His companies continue to own and operate 86 properties nationwide.

Tharaldson holds undergraduate degrees in business administration and physical education from Valley City State University (VCSU). Before branching into real estate and launching his lodging dynasty, he was a schoolteacher and insurance salesman.  He has appeared in various national publications and received numerous accolades and awards, including VCSU’s “Distinguished Alumni Award.”

Moorhead is proud to recognize Tharaldson’s resilience, innovation, and people-first leadership.

“Gary Tharaldson’s journey is a remarkable story of vision, perseverance, and leadership. His achievements in business and his profound impact on communities across the nation perfectly embody the values we strive to cultivate in our students,” said Moorhead President Tim Downs.

“I am deeply honored by this recognition from Minnesota State Moorhead,” Tharaldson said. “Education is where my journey began, and I hope my story inspires others to dream big and work hard.”

Gary will be joined at commencement by his wife, Connie, and members of their family.
