Watch President Anne’s Opening Address

On Wednesday, President Anne Blackhurst welcomed faculty and staff back to campus and kicked off the new academic year with her annual Opening Address. She focused on MSUM’s core values of grit, humility, and heart, and stressed how each one of us plays an integral role in fulfilling our university’s mission of transforming the world by transforming lives.

President Blackhurst, VP for Finance & Administration Hollaar testify on behalf of Minnesota state budget request

Yesterday, President Anne Blackhurst and Vice President for Finance and Administration Jean Hollaar testified to the House Higher Education and Career Readiness Policy and Finance Committee on behalf of the Minnesota State budget request. You can watch their testimony online. Their testimony begins approximately 13 minutes into the video.

Today, President Blackhurst and VP Hollaar will testify to the Senate Higher Education Finance and Policy Committee at 1 p.m.

Wenger, Kruse celebrate 45 years of service to MSUM

Plans for Downtown Moorhead organization underway

The Downtown Moorhead project is a collective, collaborative effort to envision and realize a new, 21st century downtown neighborhood for Moorhead.

The Downtown Moorhead project is led by a steering group made up of the presidents of Moorhead’s three colleges/university (Concordia College, M State, and Minnesota State University Moorhead) and several business and civic leaders in the community. The steering group has led the efforts to secure pledges from the Moorhead business community to support an initial three-year startup of a downtown-focused organization in Moorhead. There are currently 28 investors with combined commitments nearing half a million dollars over the next three years.  Read the rest of this entry →

President Anne’s donation keeps on giving

President Anne’s workday usually begins from home before 6 a.m. and often ends well into the evening. Her days include non-stop meetings on and off campus; multiple travel trips in and out of state; and frequent evening and weekend school-sponsored events and activities. She gets a lot of use out of her parking spot next to Owens Hall.

So it was a generous offer last spring when she donated that parking spot to the annual Spring Scholarship Gala to raise money for student scholarships. Read the rest of this entry →

President Blackhurst to sponsor MSUM student marathon runners

The Fargo Marathon is Saturday, May 20, 2017 and we are excited that the course includes the MSUM campus.

President Anne Blackhurst, a veteran marathon runner, will again reimburse up to 10 marathon registrations for MSUM students.

Sponsorships are for the full marathon, 2-person relay, and 4-person relay only.

For reimbursement, send your marathon registration confirmation, showing full payment, to Kathy Abraham, abraham@mnstate.edu, by Feb. 28, 2017.

In light of the recent Executive Order affecting international students, faculty, and staff from specified countries, I am writing to reaffirm MSUM’s commitment to creating and maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for all.

Minnesota State University Moorhead values the many contributions of our international community members and scholars. We welcome and support students without regard to nationality or religion and will continue to admit students in accordance with our nondiscrimination policy. Once students are admitted, MSUM is committed to fostering an environment in which all students can succeed.

As a reminder, MSUM safeguards individual privacy and does not release private information, including information about national origin or immigration status.

The Benefits of Gender Balance in a System’s Presidential Offices, The Chronicle of Higher Education: “In the past year, national discussions about glass ceilings in politics and in the board room, and sexist news coverage of the Olympics, have brought the subject of gender equity to the forefront of the American consciousness in compelling ways. Higher-­education institutions are no strangers to the issue, as they struggle to meet their own aggressive gender-equity goals.”

F-M college campus retention efforts aim to help students succeed, Inforum: “MSUM has seen its retention increase by 3 percent per year for the past three years. The retention rate is now 76 percent. ‘We would like to see that get up to 80 percent,’ said Brenda Amenson-Hill, MSUM’s vice president of enrollment management and student affairs.”

‘You look like a bug and you’re ready to roll’: Winter biking with Sara Watson-Curry, Inforum: “Sara Watson-Curry has been a utilitarian cyclist since her parents dropped her off at Minnesota State University Moorhead in 2001 with her mother’s tank-sized bike. It was another eight years before she ventured to pedal when the snowplows are in full force and most folks are busy scraping ice off their vehicles.”

Dragons women ranked in Division II top 25 for first time since 2009, Inforum: “Minnesota State Moorhead senior Natalie Van Wyhe said it’s ‘cool’ the Dragons are nationally ranked, but the team would rather keep a low profile. ‘We liked not being ranked because we feel like the underdog,’ Van Wyhe said. ‘At the end of the day, it doesn’t mean anything until you actually prove it.'”

MSUM Women Win 11th Straight, Men Back in Win Column, KVRR: “A balanced offensive attack helped the Minnesota State University Moorhead women’s basketball team win its 11th straight game on Saturday as the Dragons topped Concordia-St. Paul, 76-63 at Nemzek Fieldhouse in Moorhead, Minn.”

Dragon men cruise past Concordia-St.Paul, WDAY: “John Doss led MSUM with 19 points as the Dragons bounced back from their loss against Mankato. MSU Moorhead cruised past Concordia St. Paul 74-60.”

Dragons End 2016 on the Right Foot, Defeat Concordia-St. Paul 74-60, Valley News Live: “Minnesota State University Moorhead headed into the new year on a high note, winnings its final game of 2016 by defeating Concordia-St. Paul by a final score of 74-60.”

Dragons women extend winning streak to 10 games, Inforum: “A nearly two-week break between games didn’t slow down the surging Minnesota State Moorhead women’s basketball team.”

Dragon women’s basketball team wins tenth game in a row, men fall to Mankato, WDAZ: “The MSUM men’s basketball team was back from their holiday break on Friday, with a game against Minnesota State Mankato.”

MSUM women shoot past Concordia-St. Paul, WDAZ: “The MSUM women’s basketball team remained hot to extend its winning streak to 11 games. The Dragons shot 61 percent from beyond the arc to beat Concordia-St.Paul 76-63.”

Doss leads Dragons men to conference win, Inforum: “Heading into the New Year, the Minnesota State Moorhead men’s basketball team is still trying to hone an identity. The Dragons took another step in that direction Saturday, Dec. 31, at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse.”

Ham scores career high to help Dragons women extend winning streak, Inforum: “Ham made the most of her court time, scoring a career-high 17 points. Her effort helped the surging Dragons earn a 76-63 victory against Concordia-St. Paul in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women’s basketball before 565 fans.”

MSUM campus hosts community block party to kick of their homecoming, WDAY: “Moorhead is bursting with Dragon pride this week. Monday night, students, faculty and families rallied at a community block party for MSUM’s Homecoming.”

Roers/Keller William put on annual Chili Feed to raise money for United Way, WDAY: “It was the perfect day for a bowl of steamin’ hot chili. More than 900 people bellied up for the annual Chili Feed for United Way put on by Roers/Keller Williams. Along with a free-will donation, people could try 50 different types of chili made by everyone from the Killbourne Group to MSUM President Blackhurst.”

MSUM celebrates Professor Conteh and his retirement, WDAY: “An MSUM icon is being honored tonight for his contributions to higher education. Andrew Conteh has been teaching international relations and law at the university for more than 30 years.”

‘Printober’ at Plains celebrates art of printmaking, InForum: “The Plains Art Museum has stamped this month as Printober, with events and workshops dedicated to the art and education of printmaking.”

Gibson ties school record, leads Dragons to homecoming victory, InForum: “Minnesota State Moorhead wide receiver Damon Gibson was the model of scoring efficiency Saturday night, Oct. 8, at Alex Nemzek Stadium. Gibson caught four passes and all went for touchdowns. His performance vaulted the Dragons to a 41-12 homecoming victory against Minnesota-Crookston in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference football at Scheels Field.”

Dragons induct 11 individuals, one team into sports hall of fame, InForum: “Minnesota State Moorhead is inducting 11 individuals and one team into its sports hall of fame.”

Small in stature, Dragons receiver Ambrose makes big impact, InForum: “Minnesota State Moorhead quarterback Jake Hodge was in the head coach’s office earlier this week when he tossed a playful verbal jab at wide receiver Cory Ambrose.”

Impact of immigration topic of MSUM lecture, InForum: :”Oscar Flores, a professor of economics at Minnesota State University Moorhead, will discuss the “Economic Impact of Immigration on the American Economy” during a lecture at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 10 at King Hall, Room 110, on the MSUM campus.”

MSUM Wraps Up Homecoming Week With a Parade, KVRR: “MSUM is ending their eventful Homecoming Week with a parade. Students, faculty and staff came out to show their Dragon Pride as they joined the Homecoming Parade.”

Serving up Homecoming Spirit at MSUM’s “Ice Cream Palooza”, KVRR: “They served up free ice cream to students and a few professors got a pie in the face this afternoon at MSUM. The “Ice Cream Palooza” was all a part of homecoming week and put on by all the homecoming court nominees.”

MSUM Enrollment Up Based on 10th Day Numbers

Significant Gains in Graduate, International and New Freshmen 

Preliminary 10th day figures released this week show Minnesota State University Moorhead’s enrollment for new entering graduate students is up 31.7%, new entering domestic freshmen is up 21.8%, and new entering international students is up 10.9%. Overall total headcount for undergraduate and graduate students is up 1.5% while new entering transfer students is down 1.6%.  Read the rest of this entry →

Presidents Shatter ‘Glass Ceiling’ at
 Minnesota State

The launch of the new academic year is bringing about a remarkable first: at a Minnesota State college or university, the president is now as likely to be a woman as a man now that 14 out of 30 presidents are female. This is nearly double the national average (26 percent), according to Women in Higher Education.
