A Bold New Tradition: MSUM Graduates Will Wear Red

In a message sent to employees last week, President Downs shared the exciting news about transitioning to red commencement regalia.

Dear Faculty and Staff,

I am pleased to announce an exciting evolution to our commencement tradition. Beginning with the Spring 2025 ceremony, MSUM graduates will proudly wear red regalia instead of the traditional black gown, a change that boldly reflects our institution’s spirit, identity, and deep Dragon pride. Graduates will also wear a newly designed branded stole, an enduring symbol of their connection to MSUM and a tribute to the mentors, supporters, and champions who have guided them on this journey.

Commencement is a defining milestone, and we want our graduates to stand out—not only in their achievements but also in a way that visually represents the passion, resilience, and excellence of MSUM. This change aligns with our vision for MSUM’s future.

  • This change applies only to student regalia. Faculty regalia will remain unchanged.
  • This enhancement strengthens our brand identity and uplifts the commencement experience for graduates, their families, and the broader MSUM community.

How You Can Support the Transition:

  • Share this exciting change with students. Encourage them to embrace this new tradition and showcase their Dragon pride in a meaningful way.
  • Assist in addressing questions by directing students to Julie Eklund, MSUM Bookstore. Thank you to the Bookstore team for their collaboration in elevating our academic regalia.
  • Join us in making commencement a visually vibrant celebration! A sea of red will be a powerful display of MSUM’s unity.

When our graduates cross the stage in bold red regalia, they will be celebrating their accomplishments while strengthening MSUM’s legacy for generations to come. Thank you for supporting this transition and participation in Commencement, a landmark celebration in the lives of our students.

Go Dragons!
