Daniel “D Smoke” Farris, a three-time GRAMMY-nominated musician, actor, and author, will present a concert on Thursday, Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. in the Minnesota State University Moorhead Roland Dille Center for the Arts Gaede Stage. D Smoke is in the process of completing his third full-length album; is the lead of the short film “Play Hard,” which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival; guest stars in Paramount+’s Mayor of Kingstown; and has a young adult novel that’s soon to be published.  Smoke gained global notoriety in 2019 as the champion and undisputed breakout star of Netflix’s Rhythm + Flow. He showcased himself as a raw lyricist, classically trained musician, and cultural activist with “something to say.”

His debut full-length album, Black Habits, boasts features from Snoop Dogg, Jill Scott, Ari Lennox, his brothers SiR and Davion Farris, and his mother, Jackie Gouché. The album’s critical acclaim earned a 2021 GRAMMY nomination for Best Rap Album, and his ability to enter the public consciousness in an impactful way earned him a second 2021 GRAMMY nomination for Best New Artist.

In 2021, D Smoke released his sophomore album, War & Wonders, to critical acclaim. War & Wonders spotlights poignant themes, necessary social commentary, and the hurdles we overcome to appreciate what we have in life. He showcases the war on losing love, being in love, and battling himself as he is constantly led in different directions. D Smoke also received a NAACP Image Award Nomination for Outstanding New Artist.

MSUM’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion hosts the event in collaboration with the Roland Dille Center for Arts, Dragon Entertainment Group, African Student Union, Black Student Union, the SMART Start Program, Umoja, and the High School for Recording Arts.
