MSUM breaks ground on Weld Hall renovation Oct. 30
Monday, October 30 | 2 p.m. | Campus Mall in front of Weld Hall
MSUM is experiencing a significant milestone in the university’s history with the renovation of Weld Hall, the oldest and most iconic campus building. The project has been years in the making, receiving $628,000 in 2018 for the initial project design. This year’s Minnesota capital bonding bill funded the $23.1 million construction project. Weld Hall was last renovated more than 50 years ago.
While it still retains its considerable character and charm, the renovation will restore Weld to its original beauty while modernizing and equipping the building for technology-enriched, activity-based learning and collaboration.
The groundbreaking ceremony will take place on Monday, Oct. 30 at 2 p.m. in front of Weld Hall. Scheduled speakers include President Tim Downs, Executive Director of Facilities Management Brenda Norris, and Roger Moe, board chair, Minnesota State Colleges and Universities and president of National Strategies, Inc.
Additional details:
- The renovation will address $10.26 million in deferred maintenance, accessibility and current building code requirements, provide energy-efficient building systems and create state-of-the-art, interactive teaching environments.
- The auditorium will be renovated into a multi-purpose auditorium/music performance venue for use as a teaching lab and lecture hall, a venue for campus film and music performances, and a space for community/workforce training events.
- Renovation is expected to be completed in Spring 2026.
