Associate Provost for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Good afternoon colleagues,

Please join me in welcoming Dr. Frank King, Jr. to MSUM as the Associate Provost for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. This new role will help us advance our diversity, equity, and inclusion strategic priority.  Dr. King’s first day on campus in his new role will be July 1, 2022.

Originally from Maryland, Dr. King served in the U.S. Air Force from 1995 to 1999, mainly at Misawa Air Base, Japan. After leaving the service, he and his family moved to Washington, earning his undergraduate degree in social studies education and becoming a Ronald E. McNair Scholar at Eastern Washington University.

He completed a doctorate in American studies at Washington State University. Dr. King’s academic areas of interest include hip hop pedagogy, the prison industrial complex and racial disparities, the history of the War on Drugs, Afrocentric philosophy, and African American history.

In 2020, Dr. King became the Executive Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and the Special Assistant to the Chief Diversity Office at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. He assisted in building and developing support, community, and resources for faculty, staff and students to help in UW-Platteville’s call to ensure all students have substantial knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion issues. He will continue and expand this important work on our campus.

“I am honored to be a new member of the MSUM community. One of my first goals is meeting with the amazing faculty, staff, students and administrators, developing connections, listening, and collaborating to guarantee the best support for student success,” Dr. King said.

I want to give a big Dragon welcome to Dr. King. We have a lot of work to do in diversity, equity, and inclusion, and I look forward to the ideation, innovation, and implementation of the plans that will build a campus community that is diverse, inclusive, globally aware and just.

Finally, I want to thank the committee members for their time and commitment in this vital search: Ann Hiedeman, Raymond Rea, Tom, Reburn, Israa Marchand, Jered Pigeon, Earnest Lamb, Brenda Koneczny, Oscar Flores-Ibarra, and Nicole Anderson.
