Monday, Oct. 15 | 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. | CMU

Faculty Professional Development Day will be held on Monday, October 15 in the CMU. Please register by 4 p.m. on Wednesday, October 10 so we can get an accurate count of participants. The following link will take you to our brief registration survey.

The morning plenary session will feature Dr. Brian Lozenski, Assistant Professor of Urban and Multicultural Education, Macalester College, Educational Studies Department.

Dr. Lozenski will present a keynote/workshop on “Expanding Our Knowledge, Serving Our Community: Exploring the Practice of Community-Engagement.

Abstract: Guided by the University’s Civic Action Plan, the purpose of this hybrid lecture/workshop is to support the faculty and staff in realizing their goals of continued community engagement. The keynote address will draw from the school’s historical mission of community service to provide an intersectional framework helping attendees see potential for community-based scholarship, service, and outreach. Dr. Lozenski’s research and scholarship has centered community-based approaches to teaching and learning across social science disciplines. The address will situate community-engagement in theory, and also provide pragmatic, tangible examples of how bi-directional engagement can occur. Using a social justice-based framework, the workshop will explore why the university’s commitment to community-engagement is about broadening the knowledge base of the institution and making asset-based connections with the wider community.

There will also be workshops on a variety of topics in the afternoon following the plenary session and an opportunity to spend the afternoon participating in the Native Student Support Network Cultural Awareness Training (see the registration survey for more details).
