In Solidarity with Survivors

In light of recent national events, the members of MSUM’s Sexual Violence Prevention Committee acknowledge the anger and dismay that many felt witnessing public debates regarding statements made during the Supreme Court nomination and confirmation process. Over the last two weeks, these events have triggered existing trauma for many survivors of sexual assault, and regardless of politics, have felt deeply personal.

Sexual violence, harassment and abuse are not tolerated in our campus community. Sexual assault is a serious and widespread problem that has a lasting impact on individuals, families and communities.

It takes immense courage for survivors to speak out. Every story is unique and deserves to be heard without judgement or bias. We condemn the shame, blame, and harassment all too commonly faced by those who seek to hold those who commit sexual violence and harassment accountable. This is compounded when the individual being accused holds status, power or wealth.

Take heart and let recent events inspire a collective commitment to creating real and lasting change. Together, we can eliminate sexual violence and the victim-blaming. Small actions make a big difference. What will you do?

We encourage any MSUM employee who has experienced sexual assault or intimate partner abuse to seek support at the resources listed below. For more information and reporting options, please visit MSUM’s Title IX page: https://www.mnstate.edu/titleix/sexual-violence.aspx.
