Shanley students serve at MSUM
About 20 Shanley High School students participated in a day of service at MSUM yesterday, Sept. 13, as part of their homecoming week activities. The entire student body of 350 students and faculty volunteered at 18 community locations. This is the third year they have volunteered at MSUM.
“MSUM does a great job of keeping us busy all day long and the service they give to us is really great as well,” said Ashlee Cournia, a Shanley English teacher and a 2013 MSUM alumna. “We enjoy coming back here because of your hospitality.”
The students helped at MSUM with grounds work, Lego inventory (outreach), alumni storage organizing and athletics organizing and cleaning.
“We truly value the ability to create lasting partnerships with those in our community,” said Shireen Alemadi, assistant director of community outreach and engagement. “Working with Shanley High School each year to provide a place for them to do community service work is rewarding and leaves a lasting impact with those involved.”
Shanley sophomore Shani Niyonzima enjoyed the day away from school.
“I definitely enjoy serving other people. It’s fun and different, and no matter how big or small the project is, it is still helping someone. Lunch was definitely a favorite for a lot of us!”
Sophomore Trevor Tagging agreed.
“It’s been a good experience and we’re doing a good thing. And the food was really delicious.”
