Summer Cinema Series
Four summer Mondays feature silent films and music
Minnesota State University Moorhead’s Summer Cinema Series enters its 41st season with four evenings of silent films preceded by live organ music. The Summer Cinema Series is a collaborative project of MSUM’s School of Media Arts & Design and the Red River Chapter of the American Theatre Organ Society.
The Series opens Monday, July 10, with three short films featuring Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd. The films are Chaplin’s The Pawnshop, Keaton’s The Blacksmith, and Lloyd’s Never Weaken.
Second in the line-up on Monday, July 17, are two Westerns — Keaton’s short film The Paleface, a comedy; and Chip of the Flying U, featuring Hoot Gibson. In Chip of the Flying U, Margaret Whitmore, the new owner of the Flying U Ranch, thinks her ranch foreman, “Chip” Bennett, is guilty of shooting the bank president and robbing the Ridge Bank.
World War I is commemorated with two films on July 24. The Bond, a short propaganda film, precedes the feature film Shoulder Arms, a war comedy starring Charlie Chaplin as a boot camp private who wants to be a hero.
Closing the series on Monday, July 31, is a selection of silent comedy short films with a nautical theme — Keaton’s The Boat, Harry Langdon’s Shanghaied Lovers, and Lloyd’s Captain Kidd’s Kids. After this showing, treats will be served in the hallway.
All shows are in Weld Hall on the MSUM campus and start at 7:30 p.m. Pre-show organ music performed by members of the Red River Chapter of the American Theatre Organ Society begins at 7:15 p.m.
