Regaining the STE(A)M in STEM Education: Transcending Boundaries to Transform STEM Education
This public lecture will be presented by Dr. Roni Ellington on Monday, February 15 at 7:30 pm in Langseth 118. Dr. Ellington is an associate professor of Mathematics Education and serves as the Coordinator of Graduate Programs in Mathematics and Science Education at Morgan State University.
She has been mathematics educator for the past 20 years, and has been particularly committed to promoting the mathematics education of African American students. She began her career as a secondary mathematics teacher in the Baltimore City Public School System and completed her PhD degree in mathematics education from the University of Maryland at College Park in 2006. In addition to her faculty position, she has been a mathematics/STEM professional development consultant for various school districts and organizations, including the Center for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Education, Wayland Public Schools, and Baltimore City Public Schools.
Her research interests include developing interdisciplinary curriculum, understanding the experiences of faculty engaged in interdisciplinary research and teaching, the professional development of urban mathematics teachers, equity and social justice mathematics education, and the training and development of minority scholars in education. She was a featured speaker at the 2013 Baltimore TEDx conference for her presentation “An Angry Black women’s Rant on the Future of STEM Education”. She is the owner of the Transforming STEM Network, an organization committed to developing programs and projects designed to increase inclusion and diversity in STEM disciplines and careers.
