“Parenting Transgender and Gender Expansive Kids” presentation this Friday

Dr. Kristen Benson, Associate Professor, Human Development and Family Science at North Dakota State University will present “Parenting Transgender and Gender Expansive Kids” as part of the Women’s and Gender Studies Colloquium Series.

Dr. Benson will discuss her qualitative research project which highlights the experiences of 22 parents and primary caregivers who are raising a child who is transgender or gender expansive. This study explores the ways in which primary caregivers advocate for the safety and success of their child. Findings indicate that women primarily served as advocates for children’s well-being. Further, they frequently moved from a fairly novice understanding of gender identity, and as they increased their awareness of gender identity based discrimination they engaged in political advocacy and activist efforts.

The talk will take place Friday October 16, from 11:45am-1:00pm in the Women’s Center 154 Bridges.
